Jean Francois Millet was born into a poor peasant family in France in 1814.
His early works were of conventional portraits and fashionable 18th century pastoral scenes, but in 1848 he chose to exhibit a painting depicting peasant life. It was the first of many rural scenes based on memories of his own childhood. He died in France in 1875
